I remember Mrs. H's house, those summers between 4th and 7th grade. Her white tall house, thin though, to walk from the front door to the back door you would pass the living room, dining room, and kitchen all to your left like train cabins. I remember Little Mikey, his pet lizard, and their little crickets for food. His massive toy collection, he had like every Mighty Max playset. Not to mention, those were the years of Jurassic Park, so he had every dinosaur and character action figure. He had EVERY Power Ranger toy, and I mean every one. He had HeroQuest, which the gang and I played on those rainy afternoons.

But if it was a day without rain, and it usually was, we were outside, running around his backyard. He had a tree swing, on which, Older Chris would push us. He had a tree-house which stood on beams over a giant sandbox. We would play fort in that sandbox, read the Jurassic Park novel up in the tree house, and piss off the side when his mom wasn't looking.

I remember his mom had a large garden, to which we were never allowed to go in. It expanded behind all the other back yards of the houses on her block. Not that we would go in there anyway, as I recall, you could get eaten alive by mosquitoes, were it a good humid day. Outside the garden entrance stood a derelict red shed. Behind it was a good man-hunt hiding spot. On scorching days, she would suspend a sprinkler on the clothes line, we would run through it. I was fat back then, so you should have seen me covering my boy boobs as I hobbled through the freezing streams.

Then there was the moth, about the size of my hand and heavy. The creature was like something out of a rainforest, beautiful red and white stripes... we would cruelly carry it by the tips of its wings and show everyone when we found one. One time, Mikey snapped the head off a small bird in anger with his bare hands... I wonder how he's doing now.

One year, we had an obsession with the classic Universal Monster Movies, we saw every one from Bride of Frankenstein to the Murders in the Rou Morgue. Dad and Mom got into them too as we would bring much passion and monster lore home.

Some days she would take us to the Video Rental store, where we would sneak into the adult section when the staff wasn't looking. We were caught of course at one point... the threat from Mrs. H to tell my mom was enough to stop that little prank. Otherdays we would walk into town, and for a fat kid like me, it seemed like walking 10 miles in a desert. We would check out the museums or old trading card stores. She spoiled us rotten. Each trip to the park across town was accompanied with a slushie.

And then we grew up. One year we stopped going. I guess our moms figured we didn't need a babysitter anymore, either that, or she got tired of paying. Instead we were driven home. After a while, I stopped going outside, and fell in love with video games, VHS tapes and action figures. It's amazing how simple life was.

I dunno why I just felt the need to recall all this, but it's fun to reminisce once in a while.
